America’s Oldest Mall Is Saved By Transforming It Into 48 Cozy Low-Cost Micro-Apartments

Ever wanted to be locked in a shopping mall when you were a kid? Well, now you can LIVE in one if you’re based in Rhode Island. The Arcade providence, America’s first indoor shopping mall that was build in 1828, has been repurposed into a residential structure with 48 low-cost micro-lofts since it fell into decline in the late 20th century. The mall was transformed at a cost of $7 million by Northeast Collaborative Architects

Starting at $550 a month, residents can rent a one-bedroom unit from 225-800 sq. ft. Each apartment contains a kitchen, full bath with shower, built-in beds, seating and storage. There are no stoves in the units as they are designed for the people who lead busy lifestyles but the tenants can eat at freshly designed restaurants on the ground floor and enjoy vibrant evenings in a shared lounge. There’s also a shared laundry facility and a bike storage room as well as parking garage across the street. Would you live in such an apartment?

100-Year-Old Theatre Turned into a Magnificent Bookstore

In Barrio Norte, a city located in Buenos Aires, sits a sublime retreat for readers called El Ateneo Grand Splendid. This library was built from the building of the Grand Splendid Theater, a theater of 100 years old (1919) which was imagined by architects Peró & Torres Armengol. Before being THE library hosting more than one million visitors per year, this theater was a converted in a cinema first. It’s in 2000 that Argentinian architect Fernando Manzone was commissioned to convert it into a library : he kept the scene, the red curtains, the balconies and the amazing details. In 2008, El Ateneo Grand Splendid was named the most beautiful library in the world by The Guardian.

We Turned 133 Old Washing Machine Drums Into Street Lamps

We Turned 133 Old Washing Machine Drums Into Street Lamps

We made steampunk street decoration out of washing machine drums for the festival of São Pedro in the town of Câmara de Lobos, Madeira island, Portugal. It took about 6 months to collect 133 washing machines.

Many of them were found in the street meant for garbage, some were donated by owners who couldn’t use them anymore. Initially, we targeted for 100 drums but once the number was reached, the washing machines kept coming.

We are a cultural association Teatro Metaphora – associação de amigos das artes, and one of our goals is promotion of ecological well-being and responsible usage of materials.
